You can start ordering now for picking up bread on January 25. Please order by Sunday, January 22, to give us time to ferment the sourdough and make your loaves!

After this bake, we won’t be baking again until March 28th, so if you need to stock up on a few loaves, remember, they do freeze very nicely.

Our savory hearth loaf will be the KALAMATA OLIVE sourdough, great for dinner bread, sandwiches, and just dipped in olive oil anytime. And the sweet hearth loaf will be the RAISIN & TOASTED PECAN sourdough bread. These lovely little loaves make wonderful breakfast toast, teatime snacks, or road food.

This is the first time we’ve baked our FLAX SEED sourdough pan loaf during the winter season. We grind the flax seeds (a half-cup at a time, in a coffee grinder) just before we bake the bread, so the flax meal is fresh and full of omega-3s. The bread also contains pumpernickel flour, so it’s hearty and delicious, but has a nice moist texture.

The 100% whole grain ALASKAN POTATO and SPENT GRAIN pan loaves make wonderful breakfast toast and sandwiches.

After you order the bread, you can pick up your loaves on Wednesday mornings (8-10am) downtown at Side Street Espresso (412 G Street), or on Wednesday evenings (4-6pm) at Summit Spice & Tea Company’s South Anchorage store, in the little mall at Huffman and Old Seward: 1120 Huffman Rd, Suite 1.

If you’ve never ordered bread through the website, you’ll click on the “register now” link, pick a username and password, and enter your information (name, email, and phone numbers). Then you can place your order! In case you can’t make the website work, you can always email me at: , or call me at 677-3712.

If you’ve ordered bread before, but you are having trouble remembering your login name or password, you can email me , or call me at 677-3712. I’m happy to help you!

I won’t add to your stress by pointing out how many shopping days there are until Christmas… But you can start ordering now for bread pickup next Wednesday, on December 21!

You can use our bread as holiday gifts, as well as for your own holiday table!

Another gift-giving option is gift certificates for loaves of bread. I know that sometimes we get inundated with delicious goodies in December—almost too many to enjoy properly. If you want to give your friends the opportunity to receive bread later in the year, I’m happy to create special gift certificates for you, and then mail them to you or your gift recipient. Just email me at with the name of the recipients, the number of loaves you’d like to give them, and the address to which I should mail the gift certificates. You can mail me a check or drop off the payment at Side Street (8-10am next Wednesday) or Summit Spice and Tea (4-6pm next Wednesday).

If you sign up for our email list (at left) I’ll send you a reminder on the Thursdays before we bake.

For pickup on Wednesday, December 21 (please order by Sunday, December 18):

We’ll be baking our two most popular sweet and fruity sourdough breads this week—especially for gift-giving! You can decide between the DARK CHOCOLATE & CHERRY loaves, and the ever-popular FRUITED ALMOND loaves.

The CHOCOLATE & CHERRY bread is a bit decadent, filled with dried sweetened cherries and dark chocolate chunks—but it’s dairy-free, without any eggs or butter! The long fermentation of the sourdough is what gives the bread it’s great texture and moistness. It’s great with coffee, tea, or red wine! The FRUITED ALMOND bread is packed with all kinds of holiday flavors—toasted almonds, apricots, golden raisins, and cranberries. The beauty of both of these loaves is that they freeze exceptionally well—so whether you’re giving them as gifts, or stocking up for yourself, these loaves do NOT have to be eaten right away, just when you’re inundated with all kinds of cookies, candy, and rich holiday foods. Your friends can pop them in the freezer and save them for January if they like!

Our savory hearth loaf for the week will be FRESH ROSEMARY sourdough. The fresh rosemary gives the bread a savory herbal flavor that goes so well with lots of different foods. Decorated with leaf-shaped slashings on top, it’s quite beautiful on your holiday table, too. If you’re using it for a dinner bread, just heat the unwrapped loaf in a 350 degree oven for 15 minutes to get a beautiful crisp crust on it before you sit down to eat! It makes fantastic sandwiches, too, with leftover turkey and stuffing.

The 100% whole grain ALASKAN POTATO sourdough and SPENT GRAIN sourdoughpan loaves make fantastic bread cubes to use for your favorite stuffing recipe, and they are also wonderful for making toast and sandwiches.

Thanksgiving is almost here!

You can order now for Thanksgiving week (pickup on Wednesday, November 23).

If you sign up for our email list (at left) I’ll send you a reminder on the Thursdays before we bake.

For pickup on Wednesday, November 23 (please order by Sunday, November 20):

If you don’t have plans to make your own rolls for Thanksgiving dinner, our ROSEMARY SOURDOUGH bread and our KALAMATA OLIVE SOURDOUGH bread both make wonderful dinner breads for the feast—just heat them up (unwrapped) in an approximately 350-degree oven for about 15 minutes. The outside will be crusty and yummy, the inside hot and moist. Yum!

The 100% whole grain ALASKAN POTATO SOURDOUGH and SPENT GRAIN SOURDOUGH pan loaves make fantastic bread cubes to use for your favorite stuffing recipe, and they are also wonderful for making turkey sandwiches all weekend long. (The rosemary bread and olive bread also make great sandwiches, too!)

And in case you didn’t already have a dessert planned, or you want an easy breakfast or snack this week, since you’ll be busy preparing the pumpkin pies and whatnot (although I admit, I love pumpkin pie for breakfast), stock up on a loaf or two of the FRUITED ALMOND bread.
Hello!

If you haven’t already, please sign up for our email newsletters (see the sidebar on the left)! The newsletters will remind you when to order, and let you know what flavors of bread we’ll be baking for you!

We’re back to our wintertime routine, where you can order the bread here on our website and we will bake your loaves for pickup on alternate Wednesdays. Are you ready to order your very own bread and have those lovely fresh loaves waiting for you when you come pick them up on Wednesdays? No more wondering whether we’ve run out of your favorite flavor at the farmers market—the loaves you order are just for you!

IMPORTANT NOTE: We have a new delivery location on the south side. If you would normally pick up your bread at Over the Rainbow Toys, now you’ll be picking up your bread at SUMMIT SPICE & TEA COMPANY on Huffman Road. Summit Spice & Tea Company’s South Anchorage location is located on the other side of Huffman Road from the toy store and the post office, in the little mall at Huffman and Old Seward. The address is 1120 Huffman Rd, Suite 1. They have all kinds of great teas, jams, olive and nut oils, preserves, chocolates, and other goodies. Our downtown location will remain the same, at the marvelous Side Street Espresso (412 G Street).

For pickup on Wednesday, November 9 (please order by Sunday, November 6):
We’re baking the ever-popular 100% whole grain SPENT GRAIN sourdough pan loaves, packed with barley groats from Midnight Sun Brewing Company’s beer-making process that make the bread healthy, moist, and flavorful. And we’re also lined up to bake our signature LEVAIN, made with just whole wheat organic flour, well water, salt and sourdough… it’s the three-day fermentation that gives the great its great flavor and keeping quality.

For hearth loaves this week, we’re baking 100% whole wheat TOASTED SEED sourdough. Loaded with sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and flax seeds, this hearty little loaf is wonderful as toast for breakfast or with soups and salads for lunch or dinner. We’re also baking the ALASKAN POTATO & CHIVE hearth loaves, which make great sandwiches or dinner bread. You can heat them as a loaf in the oven (just pop your loaf, unwrapped, in a 350-degree oven for 10 or 15 minutes until the crust is crispy and the middle hot and moist) or just toast a couple of slices and dip them in olive oil to go with soups or salads. YUM!

And for the sweet hearth loaf of the week, we’re baking the RAISIN & TOASTED PECAN, so full of fruit that you don’t really need anything on top of your toast slices, but a little butter does make it even more wonderful!

I helped out with a fun event at Rabbit Creek Elementary School last Monday, with the Farms to Schools project on National Food Day. We did a carrot tasting for the whole school, comparing Alaskan carrots to carrots grown Outside. Guess which carrots won!
For pickup on Wednesday, October 26 (please order by Sunday, October 23):
We’re baking the ever-popular 100% whole grain SPENT GRAIN sourdough pan loaves, packed with barley groats from Midnight Sun Brewing Company’s beer-making process that make the bread healthy, moist, and flavorful.
And speaking of olives, we’re also baking those fun KALAMATA OLIVE loaves! They make wonderful dinner breads, as well, and fantastic sandwiches and panini.

And for the sweet hearth loaf of the week, we’re baking FRUITED ALMOND sourdough, full of dried apricots, cranberries, and golden raisins, studded with toasted almonds, and scented with almond extract.
You can order starting May 12th for our next bake, on May 18th. Please sign up for our email newsletter (see sidebar at left) if you’d like to be notified when we’re open for orders.

This will be your last chance to order bread and pick it up from our delivery locations before we switch to selling our bread at the South Anchorage Farmers Market on June 11. When we sell the bread at the market, you don’t need to pre-order—just show up to the market (at O’Malley and Old Seward) and buy what you want. The market opens at 9am, and it’s best to get there before 11am for a full selection, but we usually have plenty of bread until about 1pm.

For pickup on Wednesday, May 18th (please order by Sunday, May 15th):

Our regular full-sized 100% whole grain pan loaves will include our ALASKAN POTATO sourdough bread, which has a complex whole-wheaty and mild sourdough flavor, with enough baked potatoes kneaded in to make the bread nicely moist. The three days of fermentation we use to feed the sourdough to make the final dough give the loaves their distinctive flavor and extraordinary keeping quality. We’re also baking the SPENT GRAIN loaves, packed with the barley groats used by Midnight Sun Brewing Company to brew their beer. The barley gives the bread a nice chewy texture and a moist crumb, and a little honey in the dough makes the sourdough flavor a little milder.

Our savory hearth loaves this week will be the KALAMATA OLIVE sourdough bread and the FRESH ROSEMARY sourdough. Both of these breads make lovely, light and relatively soft dinner breads because they contains 40% organic bread flour, and 60% organic whole wheat flour. They are also great for sandwiches—but be forewarned, the mayonnaise does sometimes squirt out of the olive holes if you’re not careful. I think it’s worth it, myself.

Our sweet loaves this week will be the DARK CHOCOLATE & CHERRY sourdough bread. Hard to go wrong with chocolate—and this bread, while rich-tasting and delicious, is a relatively alternative to cake. No eggs and butter, and it’s dairy-free, too.

After you order the bread, you can pick up your loaves on Wednesday mornings (8-10am) downtown at Side Street Espresso (412 G Street), or on Wednesday evenings (4-6pm) at Over the Rainbow Toys on Huffman (next to the Huffman Post Office).

We’ll enable ordering on May 12, for our next bake, and you’ll need to order your bread by MIDNIGHT on Sunday, May 15th, so we have time to plan our bake, feed our sourdough, and pre-ferment the dough! When you order the bread, you can choose to “pay when you pick up your bread,” or you can pay via PayPal.
Hello from all of us at Rise & Shine Bakery!

(all of us = Alison, Dan and Meredith, age 6)

We’re on our annual winter break until we bake again for March 23! We sure love baking for you in the winter, but it’s good to have a little break, too! Since we’re so busy in the summertime, we figured we’d better go now while we have a chance! We’ll come back refreshed and raring to go!

You can start ordering again on Thursday, March 17th (St. Patrick’s Day!). If you sign up for our email newsletter (see sidebar at left) I’ll send you an email newsletter on March 17th (St. Patrick’s Day) to let you know we are open for bread orders again.

Since we’re leaving you in the lurch, bread-wise, I’ve included a recipe below for a bread that you can substitute for sourdough once in a while: skillet cornbread!

After you order the bread in March, you can pick up your loaves on Wednesday mornings (8-10am) downtown at Side Street Espresso (412 G Street), or on Wednesday evenings (4-6pm) at Over the Rainbow Toys on Huffman (next to the Huffman Post Office).

I’m happy to help you!

the bread ordering deadline

If it’s after March 16, you can start ordering again. After that, you’ll need to order your bread by MIDNIGHT on Sunday, March 20, so we have time to plan our bake, feed our sourdough, and pre-ferment the dough! When you order the bread, you can choose to “pay when you pick up your bread,” or you can pay via PayPal. By all means, use PayPal if you prefer—but I’m even happier to get your checks or cash when you come pick up your bread.

Our next bake will be for January 26th!

PLEASE NOTE: After the bake for January 26th, we’ll be taking our annual winter break… and we won’t be delivering bread again until March 21st. As most of you know already, the bread DOES freeze really well, so if you want bread while we’re gone, and have room in your freezer, stock up this week for the several weeks we’ll be gone.

For pickup on Wednesday, January 26th (please order by Sunday, January 23rd):

Our savory hearth loaves will be the ONION RYE sourdough bread and the 100% whole wheat TOASTED SEED sourdough. The onion rye makes fantastic sandwiches, as well as dinner bread—the grassy flavor of the rye flour combined with the sweet complexity of the onions really makes for delicious slices. The crunchy, hearty toasted seed bread is packed with sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, flax seeds, and a little polenta—I especially love it for breakfast toast, but it’s great with soups and salads, too.

Our sweet loaves will be the FRUITED ALMOND sourdough bread—packed with dried cranberries and apricots, golden raisins and toasted almonds. You can freeze as much as you like of any of our breads, and they will come out of the freezer wonderfully—but I think people might freeze more of this loaf than any other. It makes lovely snacks and breakfasts, great road food, hiking rations, and contributions to office parties. Stock up if you need to!

And for the regular full-sized 100% whole grain pan loaves, we’ll be baking the ALASKAN POTATO sourdough bread, which tastes just like our signature levain (100% whole wheat sourdough) but with the added moistness of the baked potatoes added to the dough. We’re also baking the SPENT GRAIN loaves, packed with the barley groats used by Midnight Sun Brewing Company to brew their beer. The barley gives the bread a nice chewy texture and a moist crumb.

After you order the bread, you can pick up your loaves on Wednesday mornings (8-10am) downtown at Side Street Espresso (412 G Street), or on Wednesday evenings (4-6pm) at Over the Rainbow Toys on Huffman (next to the Huffman Post Office).

Happy New Year!

You can order now for pickup on January 12th! Please order by Sunday, January 9th.

Our savory hearth loaves for January 12 will be the KALAMATA OLIVE sourdough bread and the PARMESAN CHEESE & ROASTED GARLIC sourdough. Both loaves are great with soups, salads, and pasta, and the olive bread makes fantastic sandwiches. If you’re using them as dinner breads, just heat them (unwrapped) at 350 degrees or so for about 15 minutes to re-crisp the crust and make the inside hot and moist.

The 100% whole grain makes them especially hearty and delicious.

This loaf contains only 100% whole wheat organic flour, water, salt and sourdough starter, the three day fermentation process is what gives this bread its flavor, keeping quality, and texture.
